Frida is visiting us in Istanbul now and I ran to Pera museum to see her art!!!
As we all probably know, she is a famous mexican painter. Out of her 143 paintings, 55 are self portraits which expresses her pain physically and psychologically. She suffered lifelong health problems, mainly caused by a traffic accident in her teenage years. She had numerous operations and this caused her to turn her attention away from the study of medicine to begin a full time painting career. She is very passionate and in love with her husband Diego Rivera who is another famous Mexican painter and she expresses this love in her paintings. She is colorful despite her pain, reflecting the colorful Mexican culture.
She is melancholic, but yet colorful, painful, complicated and passionate. Sometimes surrealist in her paintings, but says she reflects her reality in her paintings not her dreams.
I find her very interesting. She doesn't care about her hair at all on her face, she doesn't remove her hair at all, but with all these colorful huge flowers she puts on her hair and with her super colorful dresses, she also proves that she has a feminine and colorful soul. She is how she is: neutral! She is a combination of pain, passion and color.
just like in this self-portrait of herself, she painted her husband's portrait on her forehead, expressing that Diego is always in her thoughts...
This is one of my favorite:
The bride frightened at seeing life opened, 1943.
You can visit the exhibition until 20 March 2011. This is in between must-do's if you are in Istanbul.
After seeing her exhibition, I really felt like putting sconce flowers on my hair. Why are we afraid of being too colorful sometimes? She knows how to celebrate life despite all her pain, so should we!
I think besides her artistic career, she is a style-icon. And even more, sconce flowers are very trendy this year, do not hesitate to be like her!;)
Love to everyone,
