I was visiting Safranbolu and Amasra last week-end.. It was around 5-6 hours of drive from Istanbul. It was a different and exciting experience for me to explore new places of my country that I have never been before-unfortunately! Let me tell you a bit about it...:)
Safranbolu is a little cozy town in the west black sea region of Turkey. This place is in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites because of its well-preserved Ottoman era houses and architecture.. And it's name derives from "Saffron" which is the main agricultural product here. I tried tea and Turkish Delight with Saffron which were reeeally delicious. You may find all kind of products with Saffron in each little shops, such as soaps, body creams, Turkish delights and etc.. If you want to buy 1 kilo of Safran, you should be prepared to sacrifice 20thousands liras which is around 10thousand euros!!!!I am not kidding!!It is probably one of the most expensive spice ever. However I think you don't really need that much of amount, they sell 10grams of Saffron in little glass jars, and you may prepare 70 portions of rice with it and around 150 glasses of tea... only 1 fiber of Saffron is enough coloring 1 pot of water.. and the benefits are endless..
And Amasra is a little port town in the black sea, where people from nearby cities goes during the weekends just for tasting the delicious fish here! this place is a fish heaven!!Also wild-strawberries grow around this area a lot and you can find old village women selling in the streets their home-made marmalades with kiwi, wild-berries, pomegranate, hazelnut, cherry, orange, rose and more other interesting ones!! I got a pomegranate marmalade, just tasted it today and it was really good!!:) And here are my photos that I made there... have a look!!=)
